Essi pickups and hardware

The basis of Essi pre-dates production multiscale hardware. In the mid-2000's nobody offered angled bridges or pickups, so after a few rounds of sourcing custom pieces elsewhere I took on those tasks myself.

The bridge saddles used are a standard item from Graph Tech, mounted to a 3/8" custom milled brass base plate. The base plate is mounted in a recess with course height adjustment via a shim under the plate. This places the saddles within their optimum individual height adjustment range for most players. If a player's preferred action doesn't fall into the stock saddle height range the main shim thickness can be increased or decreased.

Essi pickups are an evolution of older designs. The pickup dimensions followed the guitar design, so they're compact with rear mounted height adjustment screws. The magnet arrangement consists of small neodymium blocks combined with steel spacers, which keeps the footprint small and correctly aligns the magnetic field with the string. Compared to traditional humbuckers they tend to be a little tighter in the bass and have better clarity and string separation. The pickup bobbins and bases are machined here in the Oni workshop, the steel spacers laser cut locally. All coils are CNC wound in-house.
